CHAPTER TWELVE

Chill wondered if leaving the antechamber was the right move as the doors closed behind them. They couldn’t back out now, though.

Odd how that worked out.

"Are you sure we're doing the right thing?" Kortez asked.

"Well, the door's sealed, and the Treasure Keeper will only open the doors for us, and only if the antechamber is vacant," Chill answered. She drew her rifle and checked it.

"I meant that we should let the turrets deal with the monsters and seal ourselves in there," Kortez explained. "Let the fuckers work their way through the firing corridor."

"Yeah, try talking the fucking Janissaries out of a fight for the ages," Chill muttered. "Good luck with that. You'd be lucky if they didn't declare you an enemy and gun you down."

She was kidding about them killing Kortez. From what she knew of the Janissaries, they would fight the battle even if they were locked out of the antechamber. They wouldn't turn their backs on a perfectly good fight just because it was the smart thing to do.

She wanted to think they would fight with her crew, not only because it would improve their odds when the Jindahin arrived but also because Chill felt the need to prove herself in combat when they were involved. Representing humanity seemed important. It was an ego boost, if she was honest.

It wasn’t a good reason for her to put her team in danger, though.

"Nothing better than threats to get us working together with the bastards," Ivan muttered as the door sealed behind them. "I doubt they’ll kill us, but it wouldn't be a terrible idea for them to think of us as being on their side. Might prove beneficial in the future."

Chill blinked. It wasn't often that she and her team were on the same page. Had they been around each other for so long that they were coming to the same conclusions? They weren't going to be on the same page every time, but hopefully, it would reduce the number of adverse discussions.
